讲座内容简介(Abstract):

Breast cancer poses physical and emotional problems for patients becausebreast cancer cells are prone to metastasize to other organs and to acquire resistance to multiple drugs.  The lymph nodes, lungs, bones, liver, and brain are the common metastatic sites for breast cancer patients, and this aggressive metastatic behavior negatively affects the overall survival of breast cancer patients, especiallytriple-negative breast cancer(TNBC) patients.Some of the reasons for such poor prognosis include inoperability due to the systemic dissemination of breast cancer cellsand refractoriness to chemotherapy.Although it is important to understand intrinsic drug resistanceof metastatic cancer cells as cancer metastasis occurs even before chemotherapy, little is known about such refractoriness in metastatic breast cancer cells.In addition,whileTNBC patients generally have a poor prognosis, some of themstill show a relatively better prognosis.  Therefore, better management of TNBC patients can be achieved by a routine follow-up using prognostic biomarkers easily detectable in the blood.Among the proteinsoverexpressed in a frequently used brain metastatic phenotype of human breast cancer cell line, MDA-MB-231BR, we identifiedtwoproteinsthat played a key role in drug resistance of breast cancer cells metastasized to the brainand aggressiveness of TNBC.

This presentation will cover: i) intrinsic drug resistance in a brain metastatic phenotype of human breast cancer cell line; and ii) the development of prognostic biomarker for triple-negative breast cancer.A better understanding of metastatic breast cancer cells may provide a helpfulclue to a fight against breast cancer.
