讲座内容简介(Abstract):
For millennia, in the case of traditional medicines, and centuries for current Western medicine, natural products have played an important role in clinical pharmacy. With the increased development and availability of new chemical techniques and analytical instrumentation, one great challenge for many years was the linking of natural product chemistry to pharmacology. This was somewhat alleviated by the implementation of bioassay-guided isolation methods. In recent past, however, a new challenge has emerged: high rates of the re-discovery of known molecules. The identification of already reported compounds can truly benefit a research program in many ways, but it does negatively impact pharmaceutical research due to the strong desire for easier intellectual property (IP) protection of inventions. There is thus a great need for new methods to improve the rate of novelbioactive natural product isolation and discovery. In this presentation, it will be shown how the use of one such method, LC-MS/MS based molecular networking, has aided in the efficient discovery of new bioactive natural products from two already pharmaceutically important genera of marine cyanobacteria, namely Moorea and Symploca. The samples to be discussed come from collection trips to biologically and geographically diverse areas, including American Samoa, China, Guam, India, Panama, Papua New Guinea, and Saipan. The targeted isolation of new natural products from these marine cyanobacteria represents a new paradigm in drug discovery research using informatics to augment traditional methods, and opens the door to the efficient investigation of many other natural resources.
主讲人简介:
Dr. Benjamin Naman obtained a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Psychology from Carnegie Mellon University before joining a multi-national company called Givaudan Flavors Corporation, where he spent four years working on the research and development of new natural flavor chemical ingredients for the processed foods and beverages industry. Later he went to study at The Ohio State University to research the natural products chemistry of antiparasitic medicinal plants with Endowed Chair Professor A. Douglas Kinghorn. After completion of his Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences with specialization in Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy, he went on to do postdoctoral research on the anticancer natural products chemistry of marine cyanobacteria with Distinguished Professor William Gerwick at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego. Altogether, his work has been published in bbin电子 than 20 first authored or coauthored papers, patents, and book chapters. He was inducted as a lifetime member of Rho Chi, the National Academic Honor Society in Pharmacy of the USA, and has received prestigious awards from the College of Pharmacy at The Ohio State University, the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education, and was selected as a Future Leader in Chemistry by the American Chemical Society Chemical Abstracts Service (the providers of SciFinder). His research was primarily funded by competitive fellowship awards from the US National Cancer Institute and National Institute for General Medical Sciences. Most recently, he has joined the Ningbo University Department of Marine Pharmacy as an Associate Professor, he is helping to establish their new Li Dak Sum Marine Biopharmaceutical Research Center, and he has maintained a Visiting Associate Research Scientist appointment at UC San Diego for collaborative exchanges during semester breaks. His research focuses on anticancer, antiparasitic, and neuroprotective natural products and medicinal chemistry.
