报告摘要:
The Grand Challenges for Engineering present possibly the clearest and most compelling description of engineering for students and the public alike. The Challenges call for solutions to problems facing people and society, and engineering creates those solutions. The 14 Grand Challenges for Engineering were proposed in 2008 as the goals necessary to realize this vision for engineering:
“Continuation of life on the planet, making our world bbin电子 sustainable, safe, healthy, and joyful.”
Each of these challenges is a global-scale, multidisciplinary engineering system problem—like reverse-engineer the brain, provide access to clean water, manage the nitrogen cycle, and secure cyberspace—whose varied solutions, when taken together, will serve the different global communities. Engineers must prepare to address problems like these, and this presentation describes an educational supplement to a degree program in any country or culture to prepare its workforce to undertake and lead efforts to address global problems like these Grand Challenges for Engineering.
