内容简介:When two liquid solutions of different concentrations are mixed, energy is released, i.e., the process occurs spontaneously. This process has been used to create new approaches to desalination of brackish, ocean and hyper-saline waters. Moreover, when fresh river water discharges into saline ocean water; the energy of mixing is proportional to the difference in salinity between the two water sources. This energy of mixing can be harvested and converted into useful forms of energy, namely mechanical power or electricity, through various means of controlling the mixing of two aqueous streams of varying salinity. The two most popular approaches for “salinity gradient power” (SGP) harvesting are membrane-based processes – pressure-retarded osmosis (PRO) and reverse electro-dialysis (RED). We have evaluated the potential of RED and PRO processes to harvest SGP as well as the state-of-the-art for RED and PRO membrane technologies.  In addition to standalone SGP, which can produce base load renewable energy, coupling an SGP process with an RO process has the potential to reduce the net energy consumption of seawater desalination. This new concept of “osmotic energy recovery” could theoretically reduce the SEC of seawater RO to below the theoretical minimum work of separation for a standalone RO desalination process; thus, making seawater desalination both energy efficient and cost effective relative to conventional water treatment.
